Expert Answers about Grand Design Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • How Much Longer Can a Leaf Spring Be And Work Safely on a Tandem Axle RV Trailer?
  • A leaf spring being 1-1/2" longer is going to be to much of a difference to work properly for the trailer suspension. While it may bolt up the positioning of the axles will change by quite a bit and may bind up as the suspension travels through its range of movement. Typically I do not like to see more than 1/2" difference in the length of the leaf springs when you replace them if you are unable to find the same size. If you can let me know what length springs you have and how you are measuring...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For Dexter 072-042 4-Leaf Springs
  • The length Dexter posts for their leaf springs is the flattened length, so with the 072-042 having a length of 26" you would want to compare that to our 25-1/4" long springs as we measure their length with the spring relaxed. The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR would be the size you want to look at. This is also a spring rated for a 4,000lb axle but it can be used and will just be a little stiffer and likely last longer than your current springs. You would need to change all your springs...

  • Recommended Leaf Springs for a 2018 Jayco Jay Flight Travel Trailer
  • There's no database of what size springs are on your Jayco trailer so you'll need to take a measurement. To start out with you'll need to jack one side of your trailer up to get the weight off of the suspension. The springs stretch out through the years of use so taking the weight off of them stops this. Once you've done this you'll want to measure from center to center of the leaf spring's eye bolts and count the leaf's. The 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring item # e34SR you were looking at measures...

  • Do You Carry a 37" Long Slipper Spring With 4-Leaves For a Cox Boat Trailer?
  • The 30" Slipper Spring # e89SR is our longest 4-leaf spring. I might be able to help you change out your springs with a different size that are more easily found if you can send me some images of your suspension setup with measurements from the hangers.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For a 2007 Feetwood Redline 33 Toy Hauler Travel Trailer
  • First, thank you so much for providing all the axle information on your 2007 Fleetwood Redline 33. The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e47SR is our closest match to the Lippert 702096 leaf springs that came on your trailer. Both are 4 leaves and the Lippert has a loaded length of 26" while our measurement of 25-1/8" is the unloaded length. You will want to replace all 4 leaf springs at the same time to ensure the suspension system under your trailer behaves properly.

  • Can 26" Double-Eye Leaf springs Replace 25-1/2" Double-Eye Leaf Springs
  • Hi Tim, A half inch difference between your old springs and some new springs would be well within tolerance so you would not need to replace the equalizer. The equalizer end of the # e27SR will sit slightly more in towards to the center hanger but it's such a small amount that it won't make a huge difference. You will want to replace the U-bolts when swapping out the leaf springs since they get stretched when torqued down and shouldn't be reused. With you having a 4,400lb axle it should...

  • What Should Hanger Distance be for Trailer Tandem Axle Suspension
  • Hey Eugene, you'd want a distance of 54-1/4 inches from the front to rear hanger centers. Basically to ensure you get the right shackle angle you need the distance between the spring hanger bolt center and equalizer bolt center to be about 1/8 inch less than the spring length.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A Tandem Axle Trailer With Flattened Leaf Springs
  • Hey John, You definitely weren't lying about those springs being flattened out. With them being flattened out they are going to be a bit wider so you will need a shorter eye-to-eye measurement than 26-1/4". My only concern is that the # e54SR at 25-1/8" is going to be a bit too short and have your shackle straps sit out too far, which will eventually lead to a bind up. If this was a trailer we had in the shop I'd pull a few sizes and see what worked the best. Since we don't have that...

  • Option For Suspension if no 2,000 lb Axle Meets Measurements
  • Hi Jonathan; we do not offer an axle in the dimensions you have, so you have a couple options. One is to have an axle fabricated for you, with the other option being the 2,000 lb Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension w/ Idler Hubs # A20RS545. This is an independent suspension that doesn't use an axle beam, and bolts to the frame.

  • Recommended Shackle Straps and Hangers for a Single Axle Trailer
  • I would be happy to help but first you will want to take some measurements of the hangers and shackle straps you currently have to determine which ones you'll need. Longer or shorter on the shackle straps and hangers will change the ride height of your trailer. The Dexter Heavy Duty Suspension Upgrade Kit for Single Axle Trailers item # K71-358-00 would work great with the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring item # e34SR you're purchasing. The included shackle straps have a length from center of...

  • Replacement for 3,500 lb Lippert Axle With 85" Hub Face Measurement
  • What you read is correct. You have a 3,500 lb Lippert axle with an 85" hub face and a 68-1/2" spring center measurement. I do have a solution, but unfortunately we do not carry a standard axle with these measurements. What I can offer is the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension w Electric Brakes # A35RS545E. This system is universal so it fits any frame width. It would also replace your existing leaf springs and upgrade you to an independent suspension.

  • Replacement Tires And Suspension Components For A 2019 Genesis Supreme Vortex 3317V
  • Hey Ethan, In order to find the correct replacement leaf springs, shackle straps, and equalizers for your trailer you'll need to take a few measurements first. You'll want to lift one side of the trailer by the frame and let the axles hang, remove the wheel, and then measure each component how I have depicted below. You'll also want to look at the axle tube for the axle tag sticker to get the axle capacity. Once we get some measurements on your components and we know your axle capacity...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A Trailer With 8-Leaf Leaf Springs
  • Hey Cody, The amount of leafs in the spring isn't as big as factor as you'd think. The more leafs the softer the progression will be when the spring is compressing. Less leafs will give you a stiff progression as the spring compresses. When you measured from center to center on your eyelets did you lift the trailer and allow the axle to hang to take the weight of the springs? If not, you'll need to so that you can get an accurate measurement. Once we have that measurement we'll also...

  • Will 7-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 8,000-lb Trailer Axles Fit 2021 Grand Design Momentum 320G
  • Grand Design does a great job listing the parts for their trailers but the one thing they don't list individually is the leaf springs. I can see that you have 7k axles on your Momentum 320G but you will have to measure the length to see if it matches. When replacing leaf springs you typically want the same capacity and the definitely the same length. The # DX74XR is a little higher in capacity at 8k which is what you're looking for but we don't know if the length works. These leaf springs...

  • How to Find the Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a 2022 Grand Design 265BH
  • Hey Eric, the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,300-lb Trailer Axles # SP-222275 could work but really to be sure you'd need to measure the length from center of spring eye to center of spring eye (unloaded), measure the leaf thickness, and find out what capacity your current leaf springs are. If your current leaf springs are 24 7/8 from spring eye center to spring eye center (unloaded), have 1 3/4" wide leaves, and have a spring capacity of 2,650 lbs, then these'll work great. If not,...

  • Will Increasing Leaf Spring Weight Capacity Help Prevent Springs Wearing Out
  • Hey Mike, going to a higher rated axle leaf spring like the 5k option you mentioned is going to give you the best support to prevent the springs from wearing out again. For that we do have the part # e44SR which is 25-1/4 inches. This is a very popular size spring but you should still measure yours to be sure.

  • The distance from the center of the eyelet to the center of the Dexter 6-Leaf Slipper Spring for 9,000-lb Trailer Axles # DX83QR is approximately 13-1/4". The flat length, following the curve of the leaf spring from the eyelet to the center is approximately 14".

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A 2022 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16FQ
  • Hi David, In order to find the correct replacement leaf springs for your trailer we'll need to know the eye-to-eye measurement of the spring. You'll want to loosen the lug nuts on one wheel and then jack up that side of the trailer by the frame to remove the wheel and let the axle hang. You'll then measure from the center of one eyelet to the center of the other eyelet to find the length. The next step is to look at the weight capacity of the axle to determine the correct capacity springs....

  • Replacement For 26 Inch Long Double-Eye Trailer Leaf Spring
  • Hey Ryan, You're right that leaf springs can flatten a bit over time, but I wouldn't go with a full 1/2 inch less. Something slightly shorter (1/4 inch or so) would be better, but otherwise, I'd stick with the 26 inch springs. Just a reminder the measurements should be taken center of spring eye to center of spring eye as opposed to the full length, and while we don't have 25-7/8 inch leaf springs, we do have 26 inch springs, the 2,000 lb # e77SR, 4,000 lb # e22YR, and 6,000 lb # e94SR. You'll...

  • Recommended Upgraded Equalizers For A 2021 Grand Design Transcend Xplor Travel Trailer
  • Hey James, If you have standard equalizers with a 5-3/4" horizontal and 2" vertical measurement then the Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit # K71-652-00 would be the correct replacement for you. If you're saying that you already have those and are wanting something else then you can go with the Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers # LC279687. These have a 5-1/2" horizonal and 2-1/2" vertical measurement so you'll probably have enough slack in the shackle straps to accommodate this difference without...
